Amethyst Crystals and Their Meaning


Amethyst is primarily a purple stone. Its colors range from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple. It may contain secondary colors of red and blue. 

Amethyst is a variety of quartz and some of the best sites are found in Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, India, and South Korea. It can also be found in the United States as well as Canada, especially in Ontario.


Amethyst has been used in cultures all over the World for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians revered it for its healing properties.  Greeks believed that Amethyst prevented intoxication and medieval soldiers wore Amethyst to help them keep calm in battle and heal if wounded. 

Anglican bishops wear Amethyst signet rings in reference to the Apostles being "not drunk" at Pentecost in Acts 2:15. 

Tibetans consider Amethyst sacred to the Buddha and make beads from it. Because of its purple color Amethyst has long been associated with royalty.

Amethyst is an extremely powerful and protective stone and can guard against psychic attack and transmute negative energy.  Amethyst is naturally calming and blocks negative energies in your environment. It can be used to facilitate higher states of consciousness and deep meditation. 

Mentally, Amethyst helps you focus the mind and see more opportunities. It is excellent to aid in problem solving and connecting people working together on projects or towards common goals. 

Amethyst enhances the decision-making process, bringing greater insights. It helps provide more restful sleep, especially aiding against insomnia or bad dreams. 

Amethyst balances highs and lows and aids in the transmission of neural signals throughout the brain.  Amethyst is one of the most spiritual stones, bringing love of the Divine, greater connection to your intuition, and increasing psychic Gifts. 

It helps dispel negative emotions such as anger, guilt, fear, and grief, and allows you to heal and transmute these energies with ease.  On a subtle level Amethyst connects the physical, emotional, and emotional bodies, linking them to Spirit while cleansing the chakras and aura. 


Amethyst can be used in a variety of ways for different purposes. Keep larger stones in your office to dispel any negative energy or gossip.  For better sleep, place a small Amethyst stone under your pillow at night. 

To connect with your intuition, open your third eye, or enhance your psychic Gifts, lay down and place and Amethyst crystal on your third eye chakra.
