The Ancestor's Lantern Halloween Ritual
The Ancestor's Lantern is a Halloween Tarot spread and ritual for exploring what you've inherited from those who came before you - the gifts worth carrying forward, the patterns you're ready to leave behind, and the wisdom that can light the way ahead.
Halloween has always been a time when our attention turns toward things usually kept just outside the edges of everyday life.
Ghosts. Death. The people who aren't here anymore. Old stories. Family traditions. The past.
And underneath all the costumes, candy, haunted houses, and frankly excessive numbers of decorative pumpkins, there's a pretty interesting opportunity:
To look at what came before you and decide what comes with you next.
That's what The Ancestor's Lantern is about.

You Don't Have to Summon Anybody
Ancestor work can get very spiritual very quickly, but it doesn't have to.
Maybe you believe your ancestors can communicate with you. Maybe you think of this entirely as a psychological exercise. Maybe you're somewhere in the enormous I don't know, but I'm curious territory in between.
All of those work.
You also don't need an idyllic family history. Our ancestors were human beings, which means they managed to pass down courage, resilience, recipes, weird habits, questionable coping mechanisms, family stories, talents, trauma, traditions, beliefs, and who knows what else.
Honoring where you came from doesn't mean approving of everything that happened there.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do with an inheritance is decide:
This continues.
And sometimes:
This ends with me.
The Ancestor's Lantern Ritual
Here's the whole ritual. Grab your Tarot deck, find yourself a reasonably comfortable spot, and have at it.
[THE ANCESTOR'S LANTERN IMAGE]
And yes, Halloween night is an obvious time to do it. If you can light your candle at midnight while the wind howls outside and a raven dramatically lands on your windowsill, by all means, enjoy your moment.
For everybody else:
Midnight is wonderfully dramatic, but absolutely not required.
Do it Halloween morning. At 7:43 p.m. Between trick-or-treaters. The weekend before. November 1 because you forgot.
The ancestors are not checking the clock.
You can also use The Ancestor's Lantern at any point during the year when you're thinking about family, ancestry, inherited patterns, or the parts of your history you want to carry forward.
